Specifications & documentation

Hojo Japanese-style wooden Ofuro bathtub: the deep-bathing experience

The Hojo is a cedar wood Ofuro bathtub, handcrafted by artisans. Its deep barrel-style shape prioritises seated immersion and can be customised. It is not manufactured in Japan.

The Ofuro format takes inspiration from the Japanese bathing ritual: wash before entering the tub, then immerse yourself in warm water. Wood brings a natural feel and a warm aesthetic to the bathroom.

How do you use an Ofuro bathtub?

  1. Shower before bathing: Ofuro is primarily intended for soaking and relaxation. Washing first reduces soap, shampoo and residue in the water and on the wood.
  2. Close the drain and fill: use the taps or filling system planned during installation. A tap is not integrated unless otherwise stated.
  3. Enter gradually: the tub is deep and mainly used in a seated position. Use a stable step if the tub’s height requires it.
  4. After bathing: empty the tub, rinse the inside with clean water and remove excess water with a soft cloth.

Installation: what to plan for

A filled wooden bathtub represents a significant load: the weight of the water and users must be added to the tub’s own weight. The floor’s load-bearing capacity must therefore be checked before installation, especially upstairs or on an older floor.

Provide a stable, level surface suitable for wet rooms, an accessible drain connection and taps suited to the tub’s volume. Careful waterproofing of the surrounding floor is recommended. Installation and connections should be carried out or checked by a competent professional.

Wood care

Wood is a natural material that reacts to water, heat and humidity. After each use, rinse with clean water and wipe away residual water with a soft cloth. Ventilate the room well without exposing the empty tub to intense heat or prolonged direct sunlight.

Avoid abrasive sponges, bleach, strong descalers and harsh chemicals. Before using any cleaner, oil, bath salt or essential oil, ask Japan WC whether it is compatible with your tub’s exact finish. As wood is natural and the product is handcrafted, slight variations in colour and grain are normal.

Frequently asked questions

Is this bathtub made in Japan?

No. This is a bathtub in the Japanese Ofuro style, handcrafted by artisans outside Japan.

Why is an Ofuro deeper than a conventional bathtub?

Ofuro prioritises immersing the body while seated rather than lying down as in a traditional Western bathtub.

Can I wash with soap directly in the Ofuro?

We recommend washing before immersion and reserving the Ofuro for soaking. This also makes wood care easier.

Can the dimensions be changed?

If the listing specifies made-to-measure or customisable production, contact Japan WC before ordering to confirm dimensions and project requirements.
